FreeWheel Day-1: Sunday, June 10
Hugo to Honobia,
71 miles.

FreeWheel officially started at 6:30am with a group photograph and a mass start out of Lion's Park and down Jackson Street west and then on US-271north to Antlers. There were fruit stops at Antlers (20.3), Finely (30.9), and Nashoba (52.7). The group I was riding with today stopped to take photos of Ice and Snow on a hot day in June. At 9:30 am we stopped for lunch in the town of Snow at the Way Station Deli. The early bird gets the worm and the early cyclist gets a sandwich made on hamburger buns rather than hot dog buns or even on tortillas. They were well prepared for 200 to 300 FreeWheelers but not for 1,000 of us. At Nashoba, we left US-271 and rode on SH-144 through a beautiful part of our state and got our first look at the Kiamichi Mountains. Little River provided a great swimming hole stop for the cyclists who rode later in the day when it got really hot. I arrived at Christ's 40 Acres in Honobia at about 12:30 and was the first cyclist behind the Central Tech semi-trailer truck as it pulled into camp late. It had struggled with the climb over Kiamichi Mountain on the alternate route. Several FreeWheelers were there to help unload the bags and I climbed in the back of that portable oven to help. A free sauna after a long ride! I tried to be careful, but I may not complain about baggage handlers at airports from now on.

We set up camp somewhere between the canteen, cafeteria, Big John (showers and toilets), and the big hall where the "Texans" provided music entertainment. The canteen had two separate lines for food and for drinks (find a buddy and work together). The dinner line started at 5:30 and several of us had to wait over an hour to get served. They had spaghetti, chicken, or fish. The church bunch stayed in the dormitories tonight. I think I already have a better appreciation for Moses and the Exodus.
